Railway Museum

The Railway Museum is located in Entroncamento, birthplace of the railway in Portugal.

The National Railway Museum is considered a living space that houses exhibitions relating the history of trains and railways in Portugal. When we go to the museum, we enter into an adventure of knowledge that begins by explaining to us the cultural heritage of the trains. There is then a reflection on the historical, symbolic and technological role of the railway universe. The museum’s main objective is to engage visitors in an enjoyable and educational experience while experiencing and sharing.

The museum is interactive, periodically organizes workshops and celebrates important events. It is located in the Entroncamento railway complex, with an area of 4.5 hectares. It has a permanent exhibition located inside trains full of history. The National Railway Museum has one of the most impressive collections in Europe, with a cultural and technological legacy and heritage spanning over 150 years of history. They are national treasures of wonderful machines that have traveled the railroads and history for many years.

Technique, art and science intersect with the narratives of societies, groups and the individual. The railroad has played a very important role over the centuries and is expected to play an even more important role in the future. In the future, people will travel more by train and less by plane, as the impact on climate change of trains is much lower and preferable to the option of planes. The railways helped to create new cities, new territories, connected communities and populations, created new needs and changed the way people saw the world.

The museum aims to reach the levels of excellence of the best railway museums in Europe and who knows how to surpass them, so if you have already visited the museum, expect to be surprised when you visit it again. You are sure to find new exhibits, interactivity and new elements to think about, reflect on and have fun with.
