Berlengas Beach

The Berlengas archipelago, located 10km from Peniche, is made up of the island of Berlenga Grande and the adjacent reefs, Estelas and Farilhões-Forcados. This archipelago was classified as a Natural Reserve in 1981. This space is an incredible ecosystem with unique flora and fauna and wonderful landscapes. The biological wealth makes Berlengas a natural heritage that must be conserved and preserved.

There is much to explore in this area. You can take the trails in Berlenga, explore the Forte de S. João Batista, and stroll along the beaches. If you like diving, you will have crystal clear waters to observe marine life. The observation of unique birds can also be an activity that brings you well-being and pleasure. For many, this area is truly one of the pearls of Portugal, with a natural beauty that no one can ignore.

Berlenga Grande beach is the most famous beach, and is located next to Bairro dos Pescadores. There is also Praia do Forte, which is located next to the masonry bridge that connects the fort to Berlenga.

The beaches are usually difficult to access and the sand is short or non-existent. Berlenga Grande beach is also known as the “Carreiro do Mosteiro” beach, as the former Monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome, from the early 16th century, was located here, however destroyed by the many pirate attacks that took place at the time.

The beach is a very relaxing and calm place, where Nature is queen. There are human remains in Berlengas since the first millennium BC, when it is said that it is believed to have been considered a sacred place. Later, the Romans named the Berlengas Saturn. Phoenician, Arab, Viking and later French and English ships sailed through these waters.

In the 5th century fishermen settled in the area and a century later the monks of the Order of Saint Jerome created a monastery that, in addition to housing religious, had the purpose of helping the victims of all the shipwrecks that happened at the time.

There are also incredible caves in Berlengas. Furado Grande, the most impressive cave of all, crosses the island and functions as a natural tunnel 70 meters long. This tunnel is used to reach Cova do Sono and Furado Pequeno, which we can only reach by boat. There are dozens of caves to be explored throughout the island and many of them are submerged, only accessible by diving. There is also the possibility of diving and observing a rich biodiversity in clear and crystalline waters.
