São Martinho do Porto Beach

The beach of São Martinho do Porto, located in the bay with the same name, is in the municipality of Alcobaça. In the area there are several beaches: the bay of São Martinho do Porto itself, called “Children’s Beach”, which offers easy access for everyone. All services are usually available, there is a small playground and in summer it is possible to rent cabins on the beach. The wooden walkway through the dunes to Salir do Porto makes for a pleasant walk along the bay.

The natural beauty and always calm waters of Praia de São Martinho do Porto make it a favorite destination for many people, namely those who live in and around Lisbon. The landscape is dominated by the perfect shell of its bay, with a singular and unique beauty.

On Avenida Marginal, the cosmopolitan center of the village, there are many terraces, shops, bars and restaurants. The bay of São Martinho do Porto is the last vestige of an ancient gulf that until the 16th century opened up to the ocean through a bar about 250 meters high.

The climate is a result of Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. Being protected by the cliffs that separate the bay from the open sea, São Martinho do Porto is a pleasant place even when the wind is blowing from the north.

In summer, the average water temperature is approximately 19ºC and there is no wave. Temperatures can vary between 5ºC and 20ºC in winter and between 15ºC and 30ºC in summer.

Then there is also Praia da Gralha. This beach is on the other side of the hill from São Martinho do Porto and is a calm place that contrasts with the violent Atlantic Ocean. It’s great for hiking, sunbathing or simply enjoying the sea air. This beach has no services available.

Praia Salgado is the ideal beach for lovers of quieter environments. It is a wide beach and is located between São Martinho do Porto and Nazaré. The sea is usually rough and the beach is steep, so it is not suitable for children. It has easy access and the possibility of parking. Services are limited and in high season there is monitoring by the maritime guard.

Praia de Salir is next to Salir do Porto and has a river that flows into the bay. The mouth and the beach are flat and have good accessibility.
